Thank you Bert for the extra facts. I wasnt mindful that the two the barrel and receiver had been struck Using the “WP” from the inception of utilizing the “WP” proof, nor which the “Oval P” didnt look until finally 1908.

While there are actually some plausible theories offered here and elsewhere we might never know The solution to the original dilemma in regards to the receiver with the two marks shown in a very prior publish. Depending on other alternative barrels I've noticed which include things like each the WP and mail get P and a statement from a former Winchester employee that indicated they DID use some mail buy parts when rebarreling rifles returned for service I suspect that it's a substitution receiver which was set up and proofed at Winchester and the mail buy proof was also additional to easily show it was not the first receiver. Which is just my feeling/guess. Hope that helps.
